Ambrosius Bosschaert (Dutch, 1573–1621) Bouquet of Flowers on a Ledge, 1619
Ambrosius Bosschaert the Elder was a pioneer of Dutch still-life painting. He made drawings of individual flowers, then painted them together in one symmetrical arrangement, regardless of blooming seasons. His small, brightly coloured “flower portraits” feature meticulous detail, scientific accuracy, and exuberant compositions.
